Why Before/After Photos Are Your Best Marketing Asset
No marketing asset for a field service business is more powerful than a before and after photo. It shows the transformation you create in a way that words cannot. Done right, a single photo set can win you dozens of jobs over months and years.
The most important rule is to take the photo from the exact same angle and distance, before and after. Walk to the corner of the driveway and shoot the house at the same angle you will shoot it after washing. Hold the phone at the same height. The consistency is what makes the comparison striking.
Lighting matters. Try to shoot before and after photos under the same light conditions. Early morning or late afternoon gives better colors than midday sun. Avoid shooting into the sun.
Get permission when needed. For residential customers, most people are happy for you to use photos if you ask politely. Something like, "I take before and after photos for my portfolio, is that okay with you?" works for almost everyone. Skip the faces of people; just shoot the property.
Organize your photos by job. If you take 10 sets of photos a week and never label them, within a month you will have 200 photos you cannot identify. Link photos to the specific job in your field service software so you always know what property it was, when it was done, and who the customer is.
Use the photos everywhere. Post them to Instagram, Facebook, and Google Business Profile. Add them to your website. Include a "recent work" section in your email newsletter. Send a photo to the customer the day after the job as a thank-you touch. The photos that sit on your phone and never get used are wasted marketing budget.
Before and after photos are free. They cost 30 seconds per job. Over a year of consistent photo taking, you will have a library of proof that turns skeptical prospects into booked customers.
