How to Get Your First 10 Customers (Without Spending Money on Ads)

Most new field service operators make the mistake of building a website and waiting for customers to find them. That takes months. Here is how to get your first 10 paying customers in your first two to four weeks, without spending anything on advertising.

Step one: tell every single person you know. Send a text to every contact in your phone, post on your personal Facebook and Instagram, and message people individually. Do not write a generic announcement. Write, "I just started a pressure washing business and I am looking for my first few customers in [neighborhood]. Would love to do a job for you at a discounted rate for a review." You will get three to five jobs from this alone.

Step two: go door to door on the nicest street in your area. Find a neighborhood where the houses are clean but the driveways are dirty. Knock doors and introduce yourself. Offer a first-job discount. This feels uncomfortable the first time and stops feeling uncomfortable by the tenth door. Many owner-operators get half their early customers this way.

Step three: post in local Facebook and Nextdoor groups. Search for groups in your city or neighborhood. Post something like, "I just started [Business Name] in [City] and I am looking for my first few customers. Here are some before/after photos from my first jobs. Who wants their driveway or house done before summer?" Photos in the post are essential.

Step four: set up your Google Business Profile on day one. It is free and it is the first place people look when they search for "pressure washing near me." Add your phone number, service area, and photos. Ask every early customer to leave a review.

Step five: do exceptional work and ask for referrals. After every job, send the customer a message: "Really appreciate your business. If you know anyone else who could use [service], I would love the referral." Satisfied customers who are reminded to refer you will do it. Satisfied customers who are not reminded will not.

Your first 10 customers will likely generate your next 20 through word of mouth alone, if you do good work and stay in touch.
